E tutte in coro:

The Tribe of the Wandering Shoes — Part Two

A Story Under the Stars in four parts. Just like the seasons! This is the second part: the autumn adventure.

The season was changing. The hot, sunny days of summer had given way to crisp, fresh mornings, often with a blanket of fog beginning to cover the fields. The days were drawing in and the colder wind was bringing down the leaves — the road sweepers with their brooms had barely time to gather them up before a stronger gust brought down just as many again.

The Tribe of the Wandering Shoes held an extraordinary meeting; they all agreed that the time had come to leave the beaches and take up their adventure again, before dark clouds full of rain appeared on the horizon.

They packed their bags, gathered a few provisions and cheerfully set off once more towards the Tuscan countryside. They walked through fragrant woods, where the leaves crunched beneath their steps and the colours of the trees painted the landscape in shades of red, orange and gold.

The Wandering Shoes felt the first drops of autumn rain as they roamed along winding paths and through little villages. Wherever they went, they saw more signs of the changing season: pumpkins on porches, scarecrows guarding the last fields of maize and the scent of spices in the air.

Before long they reached a small country town, where the preparations for Halloween were already in full swing. And that was where the rain began to pour down. The streets, flooded with water, looked like little torrents and the shoes were soon soaked through.

They tried climbing onto the rooftops, but the tiles, as slippery as soap, sent them sliding back down. They no longer knew what to do but, luckily, just at that moment along came Senapino the donkey, who was pulling a cart.

It was the day of the Halloween Festival and his load was yellow pumpkins, nice and round and of all different sizes. Senapino stopped and, turning to the shoes, said kindly:

“Hop on, I’ll give you a lift!”

The shoes didn’t need to be asked twice and, full of joy, they jumped aboard in the twinkling of an eye. They squeezed together as tightly as they could to make room among the pumpkins. The good donkey, having understood that they needed somewhere dry, took them out of town.

After a short journey, they arrived in front of an abandoned granary with a very tall tower.

“In the tower you’ll be warm, and from the top you can enjoy a wonderful view: the starry sky by night and the red roofs of the town by day. The perfect spot for Halloween night.”

Senapino the donkey invited them to climb down and, saying goodbye, went on his way, slowly disappearing into the distance.

No great door barred the dark entrance to the tower, so the Wandering Shoes went in and climbed the old stone staircase, worn by time. As they made their slow way up, they heard a bouncing sound behind them. Turning round, they saw the pumpkins following them, one step after another.

A few torches flared into life by magic and suddenly the staircase glowed with faint, flickering flames. Once they reached the top, the whole Tribe settled into the granary tower, along with the pumpkins that had followed them. They dried themselves off thoroughly and thought it would be fun to celebrate Halloween all together.

To set the right mood, they carved the pumpkins that had come down from Senapino’s cart, put candle stubs they had found among the granary’s odds and ends inside them and, once these were lit, set them on the windowsills and on the terrace. The tower, with its glowing pumpkins, could be seen from far away and was a sight not to be missed. The villagers would surely enjoy the view.

But then — suddenly, incredibly and unexpectedly — every one of the pumpkins, with a leap, turned into a spider with long legs and big, glowing red eyes. Moving fast, they set off to hunt down the Wandering Shoes, as if they had always been their favourite prey.

What a fright! What a commotion!

There were shoes running off in every direction and others hiding behind the braver ones, who, stretching out their laces, tied themselves to one another like a magic web. In no time at all, the web wove itself together and grew and grew, forming an enchanted shield around the shoes to protect them.

The spiders, furious, began jumping and clambering everywhere like mad things, but without managing to catch a single shoe. Disappointed after several attempts, they went back down the stairs, leaving the granary and heading for the town in a desperate search for new prey. But the streets were full of floating ghosts, as white as sheets, who, brushing against the frightening spiders, turned them back into friendly glowing pumpkins.

The danger had been averted. It was Halloween night and, as we well know, on that enchanted night anything could happen.

Up in the tower, too, the Wandering Shoes were breathing a sigh of relief, while the last bits of candle were burning down. Soon it grew dark, and the wicked forces, which could find no peace, launched a new attack.

In the great, dark and gloomy room, a gust of icy wind slammed all the doors and windows shut. Enormous sabres appeared, crossed and wrapped in iron chains. And, as if that weren’t enough, in the middle there was a big rusty bolt, with keys dangling out of reach.

By magic, every way out was barred and the shoes had been taken prisoner.

Two pairs of yellow shoes tried in vain to kick down the great exit door, while others tried to jump up to the keys, but they had no luck either. And so, even though the pumpkins had been beaten, the Wandering Shoes found themselves trapped in the abandoned granary, victims of some wicked power.

Just when they had given up all hope of being set free and celebrating Halloween, a sudden deafening blare, a tremor and a blast of wind came rushing towards the tower. A fiery streak of lightning burst open the main bolt with a great crash and, with a loud, sharp, ringing snap of metal, the key fell. At that, all the swords and chains came crashing to the floor at once. The curse melted away like a ghostly glimmer.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the shoes ran to the tower windows to see what had happened! Not only were they open, but they were lit once more by torches of warm, flickering light.

From there they could see the town below, where pumpkins of every size lit up the streets with their burning candles. This time the danger really had passed, and it was the most wonderful Halloween night ever. On the terrace there were tempting treats of every kind: some were even shaped like spiders, crunchy and ready to munch.

Safe and happy at last, the next morning they would be able to continue their journey.

In the night, they asked one another:

“Could that donkey Senapino have been part of the spell that imprisoned us?” “Who knows, who knows, who can say?”

And all together, in chorus:

“Perhaps Little Witch Soletta knows something about it! Could she be the one pulling the magic thread of the web?”

What can we expect now, after the escapades of summer and autumn?

Watch this space: the tale goes on in the third part of the story, the winter adventure in the snowy mountains. Don’t miss the next high-altitude journey!
